Mark Rowlands looks forwards to the weekend clash with FEC Nottingham Forest
Well well it's not every week that we get double European Champions at the Liberty. Even if for those double European Champions it was lifetime ago.
It seems odd that such giants as Carmarthen Town, Llanelli, Bangor City and Rhyl have appeared in Europe since Forest last managed it. In fact I think we have competed in Europe more times than Forest which surely on that basis makes us the European giants and not them.
It was three years ago that the phrase FEC Nottingham Forest was first coined via this website (well it's predecessor anyway) and since then it has been used by a host of celebrities and famous faces worldwide as some of the examples below will illustrate
Current PM Gordon Brown - I haven't a FECing clue
US leader George W Bush - I am a total FECwit
Michael Vaughan, former England cricket captain - I have decided it's time to FEC off
Sir Alex Ferguson - sell Ronaldo to Real Madrid? Like FEC I will
John Terry after missing the vital penalty in the Champions League final - Oh FEC!
Carol Vorderman responding to her new wage offer from Countdown bosses - FEC off
As you can see it has taken off the world over. These days though Nottingham Forest are as useful in Europe as a three point plug, the Labour Party and Glasgow Rangers.
However, Swansea City are always known for respecting their opponents and as a special dispensation this weekend they have allowed Forest to bring with them their two European Cups - each one embedded in the side of Robert Earnshaw's head..........(think about it)
Forest come to the Liberty this season having been boosted by their annual striker car boot sale. For those not aware of how these things work it's where you take your shit and sell it before replacing it with more shit. And Colin Calderwood is an expert at it as he saw Grunt Holt disappear to somewhere crap whilst they paid £2.5 million for a striker who could not get a regular starting berth in the worst Premiership side in history. In return for their best player going to said worst side on a free transfer, Shrewd in the transfer market is our Colin.......
And how impressed is everyone that I have got this far without mentioning Sherwood Forest or Robin Hood at all in this preview. Had I done so that would have just been predictable - Hood robbed from the rich to give to the poor but this is about Nottingham Forest and not Cardiff City whilst Sherwood Forest is a small area on the outskirts of Derby. But that brings the poor back into it once more.
So as the team prepare to face the European Giants with many seasons behind them and record European scores into the bargain as well we wonder if Forest will be able to cope with that particular task or whether facing someone with such a history is beyond them
Time will tell.......
