Mercedes F1 and UCL breathing aid approved for NHS use ...
at 09:43 30 Mar 2020

"UCLH critical care consultant Professor Mervyn Singer, UCL Medicine, said: “These devices will help to save lives by ensuring that ventilators, a limited resource, are used only for the most severely ill."

“While they will be tested at UCLH first, we hope they will make a real difference to hospitals across the UK by reducing demand on intensive care staff and beds, as well as helping patients recover without the need for more invasive ventilation.”

Yeah right you selfish b@stard!!

"The man said: "I deeply regret taking them. It was selfish and irresponsible.

"I am going to make a donation to an NHS charity or a charity that's helping with coronavirus.

"I just wanted to grab one pair, but they were all clumped together and they all came out at once.

"To be honest I was a bit embarrassed to put them back, so I just threw them on the car seat."

Mumbles Railway ...
at 13:30 25 Mar 2020

Today on the 25th March 1807 the Mumbles Railway opened the first fee paying passenger railway service in the world.

The track was laid at a cost of £9000 (£8 million today).

"The Mumbles Railway was built under an Act of Parliament in 1804, authorising the removal and carriage of limestone from the quarries at Mumbles to the docks area of nearby Swansea. From there the limestone would be sent to all corners of the world. Construction was completed in 1806 and services began. There was no formal opening ceremony and, to begin with at least, it was industrial product rather than people that was the important factor."

"At this stage the operation was known as the Oystermouth Railway, only later acquiring the correct name of the Swansea and Mumbles Railway - or the Mumbles Railway as it was soon called. There was no road link between Swansea and Mumbles and, when they looked at the children hitching rides on the trams, it did not take local entrepreneurs long to realise that some form of passenger service, for people who wanted or needed to make the trip, could be something of a goldmine."

"In 1807 permission was given for the line to carry passengers. Benjamin French, one of the early investors in the project, paid £20 for the right to run the line and carry passengers."

"The concession was for one year only and on 25 March 1807 the world's first passenger railway began operations. It was a huge success, so much so that French and his partners quickly upped their offer to £25 a year in order to continue with the arrangement."

"It was an amazing achievement for small investors from south Wales. George Stephenson did not open his Stockton and Darlington Railway (the first public railway to use steam powered locomotives) until 1825 and by then the Mumbles Railway had been running for nearly 20 years."

**January 2020 marked the 60th anniversary of the closure of the Mumbles Railway ... its last journey was made at 11.42 on the 5th January 1960.**

NHS signs deal for 8,000 private hospital beds and 20,000 staff ...
at 18:39 21 Mar 2020

"The entire capacity of the private hospital sector in England will be used to treat coronavirus patients, and take on work the NHS is too overwhelmed to carry out, under a deal announced by the government on Saturday.

"As the taxpayer-funded health service braces for hundreds of thousands of extra patients, the agreement will provide nearly 20,000 extra staff to help manage the surge in cases, NHS England said.

The arrangement, which in effect puts the whole private hospital sector under contract to the government, will start on Monday.

The private hospitals will not make a profit, undertaking the work at cost."

Windrush scandal: Home Office showed 'ignorance’ of race ...
at 11:26 20 Mar 2020

"The Home Office showed “ignorance and thoughtlessness” on the issue of race, a review of the Windrush scandal says.

The long-awaited review comes after some of those who came to the UK from Commonwealth countries were wrongly told they were in Britain illegally.

There was a “profound institutional failure” which turned thousands of people’s lives upside down, it said.

Warnings about the “hostile environment” policy were “not heeded”, the review concludes.

Report writer Wendy Williams, an inspector of constabulary, called on the government to provide an “unqualified apology” to those affected and the wider black African-Caribbean community.

Speaking in the House of Commons Home Secretary Priti Patel said there was "nothing I can say to undo the pain" but added "on behalf of this and successive governments I am truly sorry for the actions that span decades".

Ms Patel said people from the Windrush generation were subject to "insensitive treatment by the very country they called home".

"I am sorry that people's trust has been betrayed."

She added that those who were eligible would receive compensation"

Education Minister Kirsty Williams – Response to Coronavirus ...
at 01:12 20 Mar 2020

"Kirsty Williams (KW) confirms that schools will have a ‘new purpose’ to help support those most in need, including those involved in the immediate response to the outbreak.

She says the supporting and safeguarding of the vulnerable and ensuring a continuity of learning for pupils who benefit from free school meals (FSM) and children with additional learning needs (ALN) is a key area of interest.

Says work is ‘already underway’ with local authorities and individual schools on what the new provision will look like for launch on Monday."
