Have the government failed? 08:00 - Apr 27 with 33121 viewsRiscaJack

Can the more educated posters on this forum give me some opinions on this?

For me it looks like a complete disgrace from the start, no leadership, promises not kept, flights still coming into country from badly hit parts of world, using the excuse of "scientific advice" for not postponing the likes of Cheltenham Festival, Liverpool v Madrid, music gigs. We watched what was happening in Italy, I just can't find any excuses for them.

"Germany" hasn't reintroduced lockdown. It can't, as cases are managed on a State by State basis. There have been smaller regional restrictions, which is only to be expected as areas that escaped serious infection initially develop cases. The same will apply elsewhere.

I'm not aware of any country which has reintroduced the kind of nationwide lockdown initially implemented.

Bloody hell I thought I could be pedantic.

Simple answer. Yes. Care homes. The UK government has failed big time. There will be an enquiry after all this and those responsible should face the consequences.

Yes, the ‘second wave’ isn’t really taking hold anywhere, including Italy where everyone has been out and about at bars and cafes for weeks now.

Hopefully that will hold here. The first pictures of crowded beaches came at least three or four weeks ago here and there has seemingly been little impact (I was surprised after the street party nonsense on VE Day which at the time I thought would be a disaster).

Perhaps it’s the sunshine, the temperature or just the virus doesn’t work the same way as expected. Who knows. All we can do is hope. But certainly if there’s no spike in 2 or 3 weeks after the crowds at the weekend and the protests then that will be a great relief to everyone.

The second wave will coincide with our flu season this winter.

Nobody knows how this pandemic will pan out, not even the top microbiologists the world has to offer.

It may dissappear as quickly as it arrived, who knows.

You might think I've forgotten, but one day, when you least expect it, my time will come.

If it is a seasonal thing perhaps we’ll see a bit of a spike in those countries that are moving into winter.

Hey Kilk, Plaid don't think Drakers has done very well for Wales,

Though truthfully, in a straight choice I'd take Drakers over Price everytime!

I am more Plaid, but i think Drakers has been excellent.

Agreed.

The Tory machine is now saying ‘we know we have done well, because the British people have done well’.

Disgraceful and deliberate.

Listened to a bit of the Daily Update today, with Handcock
The amount of spin they are putting on their complete and utter sh!t show of a performance during this crisis is nauseating.
They are treating us like tvvats, can't folk see they are being lied to, by any measure it's appalling.

I saw a clip of Nadhim Zahawi on Question Time saying that if we counted Covid-19 deaths in the same way as Spain we would have had 20 deaths recorded on Thursday instead of 170 odd.
If that is true across the board comparing these national figures is a pointless exercise.

Or as Keir pointed out on 12 May .....

Holding up a print-out of a government chart, he told MPs: “Last week, I showed the prime minister his own slide showing that the UK now has the highest death toll in Europe and the second highest in the world.

“A version of this slide has been shown at the Downing Street press conference every day since 30 March - that’s seven weeks.

“Yesterday, the government stopped publishing the international comparison and the slide is gone. Why?”

They are trying to hide the deaths. Simples.

When we get down to it I suspect the biggest problem will be in care homes, and people being released from hospitals into care homes. There doesn't seem to be as much transmission of the virus "In the wild" so to speak.

Enough people have been predicting a second wave for what seems like a couple of months now, and it hasn't happened, either here or abroad. VE Day was nearly a month ago and nothing came of that. The current protests will give us another idea in a couple of weeks as to whether or not a big rise in infections is likely, or if the virus is simply beginning to burn itself out as some Italian specialists are now saying.

As for the figures being batted around, unless everyone everywhere records their data in the same way then they're basically worthless. I've got enough doubts about the way they're being recorded here never mind in other countries.

Patients are not being released into care home with the virus still active.Doctors make the call , and won't send them home if they still have it, however all patients when released are advised to self isolate for up to 14 days, but that's not possible in care homes.

It appears to me that they are dekibrately introducing lies , confusion, obfuscation, misinformation . It sews frustration and doubt in the public making it hard to concentrate on specific failures. Its like a form of white noise. I suspect Mr Cummings is using it as a deliberate tactic.

All very frighteniing if you ask me.

I just hope some people will now realise this is what they (Cummings, Johnson, Gove and the sycophants packing the Cabinet) were doing all the time through the Brexit fiasco (and still are). A lot of people got sucked in to their bullsh*t when there weren't immediate, obvious consequences. But now people's lives are literally on the line it's harder to excuse this bunch of frauds. Not that it stops some from still trying of course.

And when Starmer calls it in PMQs, Johnson begins to shout and accuse him of being unhelpful and constantly criticising!!

Very true.

The cant gaslight the body count though.

Their handling of the pandemic has been dreadfully bad from start to finish.
Operation ‘last gasp’ shows up Johnson for what he is. Tory scum.
