The late, great Michael Foot. 13:51 - Oct 3 with 1489 viewsLohengrin

If you have a half hour to spare listen to this. The first four minutes or so is just the preamble before he hits his stride, it’s a tour-de-majeste of public speaking.

Youngsters who are used to seeing Johnson and Corbyn’s halting, spluttering displays across the despatch box have no idea of how things used to be, how precipitous the decline.

A good man that was vilified mercilessly by the rabid tory press, simply because of how he looked and because of their thatcherite wet dream.

Just another failed politician who delivered nothing. Mind you he would have been a great in the Welsh Assembly the home of people who could not get elected as MPs, MEPs, or local councillors.

Hardly some were mp's but preferred to serve Wales directly, some were am's and mep's and some were councillors and am's, I prefer if they only did one job mind.

No he was no centrist, Bryn. Nor was he anything remotely like Corbyn.

If you want to know the man the best place to take him is at his own word. He authored eighteen books and his journalism over seven decades was voluminous. He was the sort of principled, intellectual buccaneer not to be found in this century. The most fascinating man I’ve ever met.

"For his 90th birthday, Foot was registered with the Football League as an honorary player and given the shirt number 90. This made him the oldest registered professional player in the history of football".

Even his surging runs down the left wasn’t enough for them when they next faced us. We did the double 1-0 home and away.

Born too late. His oratory didn’t really suit the television age.

Bryn, he would shit Corbyns. This was a genuine man of principle, and an intellectual heavyweight, not some Wolfie Smith moron on an ego trip.

The greatest speakers tailor their presentation to the occasion. He could do that, he did that. You don’t get to be the youngest President of the Oxford Union without the ability to read an audience.

Yes. How he looked didn’t fit television Loh, not how he spoke. I campaigned for him, knowing it was a doomed cause, because of his integrity and passion. Some real heavyweights around in those days whether you agreed or disagreed with their politics. Today makes me want to weep.

Gwynfor went to the same university authored a similar amount of books but Gwynfor was a better orator than Foot plus of course Foot lost to Thatcher and Gwynfor beat her, hence the Gwynfor 1 Thatcher 0 painted in big letters on the embankment outside Parliament.

Well he was never in the running for the GQ Awards, was he?

His physical appearance, his gait especially, deteriorated rapidly after the car crash and he was always afflicted by eczema as a result of his chronic asthma. I always thought there was a really unnecessary, outright cruel undertone to the way he was portrayed in Spitting Image too, thinking back. He was a theorist and the only thing that mattered was what he had going on upstairs.

Gwynfor would have opponents on their feet applauding him after he makes a speech, Gwynfor was a lawyer, small business man, historian, author, political leader for decades, he was of course a highly intelligent intellectual man, Foot was premier league and so was Gwynfor but Gwynfor takes him overall as Gwynfor was better at public speaking and better for not just being a writer like Foot but in Gwynfor's case for being a historian of high repute.
